The basic issue is that the data scientist hype curve peaked about 5 years ago circa 2012–2015. In 2018, data scientists are dime a dozen. I have 15 years of experience in data science. I can code algorithms from scratch in Python and can build sophisticated machine learning models with high accuracy. I recently lost my job and then I applied for about 50–60 jobs and not one of them have called me back yet. Not one! One company called me back but it was one of those companies that didn’t have a clue what is going on. They needed a data engineer who can not only do ETL but also develop pure SW. No wonder no one is applying for that job! lol. They have confused a SW developer and a data engineer. I told them I do not want to interview for that job.
